Sunday 30th October 2005 - A memorable day.

Sunday 30th October 2005 was the last day of the 2005 season. This day would have the last Junior match of the season, and the play-offs for the top senior team. It also was the day of the presentations.

Juniors
The first disappointment was that Shene Youngbloods (Juniors) had managed to decrease the goal difference lead that Oxford Hurricanes had over them, from 24 goals to just 2 goals. All they had to do was beat Ash by more than two goals and they would win the Junior league on goal difference. Although Ash held them off for the first half, Ash conceded 6 goals allowing Shene to snatch first place from us. So, Hurricanes come second in the league – despite being the best Junior team in the league!

Seniors
Next came the Oxford Fongpei game against Reading. Earlier in the season, Reading had managed to beat Fongpei – no one can quite understand how. This meant that they now had to beat Reading to come top of their half of the league.

After this game there would be playoffs to decide overall league position. As there are 4 teams competing for three National places, if we lost both of the games today, we would not be going to Torbay. So this first game against Reading was Vital – we had already booked Hotels for the Nationals and didn’t want to leave the Hotel empty!

We dominated Reading. Our play was fluid and coordinated and every player exceeded his abilities. We won comfortably, but this was only the preparation for what would follow.

We had now come top in our division of the league. KSF were second. This meant that we had to play Cardiff Panthers for overall league leadership.

There where rumours that the league was not split evenly and that we where in the easier half. We would have to show them that we where top of the league by right not by having an easier route!

The game started well and we seemed to have the better control of play. But, by the end of the first half, we had gone down 3-1.

There is a major difference between fong-pei and the Panthers and that is the age difference. Most of Fongpei are 18 years old or younger. Old school vs New wave. The difference would show when the Panthers started to tire.

The second half started with Fong-pei still in high spirits. We scored and then brought the score level. They scored and we where one goal down with less than two minutes of play left. We pulled our goalie leaving an open goal, but 5 players on field. Somehow that inspired Fong-pei to put one away. Will back in goal, somehow the panthers managed to put one away themselves. The clock was ticking and we where one goal down. Again, we pulled our goalie and with just 16 seconds left on the clock, Easy managed to put away the equaliser.

This match was the last match of the day and of the season. All of the Sash region where packing out the stands and around the rink watching this incredible spectacle

Something very interesting was on the ceiling....

We had drawn, so the League title would be decided on an additional 5 minutes each way. No Golden goal, just two more 5 minute periods. We managed to score in the first period. For the first time in the match we had drawn ahead. All we had to do was hold on. Shots went on goal from both sides and the play was frantic. We just kept sending high balls up to their end and holding the play in their half. Panthers finally pulled their goalie in an attempt to win back the game, but despite a few heart stopping moments – they couldn’t do it. We had actually won. The game of the year, watched by a packed Farnborough sports hall and an amazing finish to the season. To top it all, the goals and assists that Dave Edwards got put him into top goal scorer position.

A couple of well chuffed Fong-Peians

Fong-pei had been put together this season mainly as a way of giving the Juniors more play time. It had been touch and go whether there would have been enough players to make it viable at the start of the season. We knew it could do quite well and probably come in the top half of the league – but to win the league and fight off such strong competition – incredible.
